Debest for Baby

PicsArt_1403029936606

As a Certified Birth Doula, I am always on the look out for the latest and greatest for mom and baby. When I was recently asked to check out the Debest line of naturally colored baby garments, I couldn’t resist. I received the adorable “Ruffles in Bloom” 2-piece set pictured above and was immediately impressed by the quality. The material is soft and durable to the touch.

A baby’s skin is so sensitive that it is important to consider not just what products you use on their skin, but the dyes and materials in their clothing and bedding as well. The naturally colored cotton in Debest baby garments is organically grown, making it softer to the skin than conventional white cotton. It is also free from harmful chemicals and dyes commonly used in production. With Debest you can protect your baby’s skin and health, while helping to protect the environment.

Over the years I have made an effort to look for organic baby clothing and products to recommend to clients or when shopping for little ones. One thing I’ve noticed is that naturally colored and organic baby clothes tend to lack in variety and style. This is where Debest impressed me even more. I love the colors and flowered pattern of the outfit above. Their other selections are just as cute and stylish. You will find short and long-sleeve options, two-piece sets, sleepers, and blankets in different patterns and styles for girls and boys. Prices and shipping costs are very reasonable and when you sign-up you’ll receive 25% off your first purchase! Whether you’re shopping for a unique gift or buying clothes for your little one, I highly recommend Debest. Your baby deserves only the best!

More Good News! I’ve got an exclusive discount code for TLGP readers…

Your Child’s First Pet

What Should Your Child’s First Pet Be? (Guest Post)

It has been said that giving your child a pet to take care of will help him or her learn what being responsible is about. As a first time mom to this kind of parenting, it may be quite difficult to match your child to the right pet. The ideal age for a child to own a pet is 7 years old and up. However, starting at age 5 or 6 can be also be okay, as long as you know what you are up for! Caring for even the littlest of pets requires supervision from adults.

To help you with the decision making process, here are some ideas and tips for each potential pet:

galeandcurlyDogs

We all know that canines are the most popular animals to own as pets. Man’s best friend indeed, because it is a companion pet which your child can interact with. Before owning one, you need to know first if your child can be counted on to do tasks for his pet such as feeding the dog and filling up its water supply. Dogs need high maintenance because they need daily exercise, toilet training, and a lot of caring. The best dog breeds to own as pets are Beagle, Golden Retriever, Maltese, Pug, Shih tzu, and Poodle, to name a few. If you live in a smaller house or in an apartment, it would be best to choose smaller breeds. Be careful when considering breeds known as being aggressive, such as Rottweiler and Doberman. They may not be suitable for young children.

Cats

Compared to canine, the moody domestic feline is perfect for a nurturing child who does not really mind being ignored every now and then. The best breed for household cats are the Persian cats, Abyssinians, Burmese, Birmans, Manx, Ragdolls and Somalis. Stray kittens that are usually of multiple breeds could grow up to be a very good companion and a pest controller too.

gale@avilonBirds

Consider the Myna birds. My neighbor used to have one, and it was a main attraction especially for kids who passed by. Myna birds pick up people’s voice as well as intonation and expressions. Birds are perfect for children who are keen observers of animal behavior. If you decide for a pet bird, you need to be sure that you and your child are prepared for the commitment because birds can possibly live a long time. Finches and canaries are simple to maintain and could be fascinating for your child. These types don’t care much for human attention and interaction, so it would be better to get several to provide them company. Parakeets are known to develop a strong connection with their owners and can learn to talk too. My uncle has one and does not put it in a cage. He just lets it fly around but it eventually comes back to him some time before sunset.

Goldfish

Goldfish as pets may look easy to maintain because they don’t need toilet-training and walking, but the biggest challenge is to keep them alive! The germy waste-filled bowl or tank needs to be regularly cleaned and maintained. You also need to regularly supply aerated water. Fish are best for first time pet owners.

Small Mammals

Small mammals like hamsters, guinea pigs, and rabbits are popular pet choices. They are known for their cuteness, being harmless and clever. Pocket pets like these are ideal for families that spend most of their time outside the house. If you think that you and your child are not ready yet to take care of a cat or a dog, then having this type of pet is a good compromise for kids who are excited to have animals in the house.

Pretty Mommies Let’s Be Clear Facial Cleanser ~ This all natural cleanser is going to definitely be one I recommend to my Doula clients. When you’re pregnant, avoiding toxins is extremely important for mom and baby. Pretty Mommy products are free of parabens, formaldehyde, sulfate, phthalate, dimethicone, petroleum, phenoxyethanol, oxybenzone, artificial fragrances and dyes. I received a full size cleaner that sells for $30 and a 20% off online discount code.

GRANDMA’s Pure and Natural Lye Soap ~ Coincidentally, I was given the opportunity to review Grandma’s Lye Soap just last month. It is an all natural soap free of detergents, dyes, fragrances and other chemicals found in conventional skin care products. It helps to alleviate symptoms of several skin conditions. To read my review: Click Here. I received a travel size bar in my box which sells for $1.49. A full size bar sells for $5. I also received a 20% off discount code and free samples of other products with purchase.

Pure + Remedy Vitamin C Facial Serum & “Precious Drops” Super Hydrating Serum ~ Another coincidence! Back in August, I received samples of the Pure + Remedy facial moisturizer line in my Ecocentric Mom box, but had not gotten around to sampling them until about a week ago. (To read my review: Click Here) It’s been great to incorporate the facial serum and precious drops into my skin regimen as well. Pure + Remedy is a great line that offers high quality holistic skin care products that are free of toxins and  definitely improve the appearance and texture of your skin. The Vitamin C Facial Serum travel size I received sells for $9.50 and the Precious Drops Hydrating Serum travel size sells for $10.50. I also got a 20% online discount code.

LIPS by Healthy Houseful ~ In the middle of this harsh winter we are having on the East Coast I happily welcome whatever chapstick I can get my lips on. Of course, avoiding toxic ingredients found in most conventional brands is key to healthy lips. Well, LIPS lip balm is made with coconut oil, shea butter and essential oils. This combo of healthy and organic ingredients makes for fast relief and beautiful lips. I received a full size chapstick which sells for $3 and a 15% discount code.

pur-Absorb Iron ~ We all know how important enough iron is, especially if you’re having a baby. It’s also very important to consider just how much iron your body is actually absorbing. The thing is, not all people or iron supplements are created equal. You always want to check with your Doctor on your ideal levels.  I was pleasantly surprised to receive a full size box with 28 packets of high absorption, 100% natural, liquid iron supplement. This box sells for $19.99 and I received a $2 retail coupon. This is another product I will be recommending to my Doula clients.

Sjaak’s Organic Fair Trade Chocolate Hearts ~ Just in time for Valentine’s Day, it was a sweet treat to be able to sample these yummy chocolate hearts. Supporting sustainable agriculture, fair trade practices, and a positive work environment are important to me. These little organic non-GMO chocolates can make such a big impact. They sell for only 65 cents per heart and I received 3.

Heart Bracelet by House of Metalworks ~ My favorite item in the box….a special Valentine’s Day gift just for me! Because these bracelets are handmade, each one is unique. No two are alike and they are made in the U.S.A. using reclaimed and recycled metals. One bracelet sells for $12 and I received a 10% online discount.

Ecocentric Mom Jan/Feb Expert Tips ~ As usual, my subscription box is not complete without the Ecocentric Mom Expert Tips postcard. The topics for this month are: “Resolutions…or Goals for 2014” and “Tips to Stay on Track with your New Year’s Resolution Goals”

JuJu Band for Babies

As a Doula, I often get asked for advice on baby products and methods to soothe “colic”.  I am a firm believer in babies communicating through different cries.  Therefore, I think “colic” is really just a way of saying that you’re not sure why the baby is fussy or crying.  A very common reason for “colicky” newborns is gas. This is primarily due to babies’ digestive systems not being fully developed for a few months. Their bellies are adjusting to different forms and methods of nutrition.

Speaking of baby’s belly, parents sometimes also worry about their newborn’s belly button.  We want to keep it protected and make sure the umbilical stub does not get wet or fall off in an unnatural way. Well, I was recently introduced to a great product that addresses both baby belly issues!

PicsArt_1389649073541

JuJu Band is based on an ancient tradition called baby belly binding.  It has been practiced for many years by many different cultures around the world.  The JuJu Band company designs related products for the modern, busy parent.  Their Belly Binder comes in a variety of cute designs, is easy to use, machine washable, and made with 100% cotton in the U.S.A.  Best of all, it is a natural alternative in treating your baby and is multi-functional!  At around $15, it is a great deal too.

First, the JuJu Belly Binder can be used as a newborn naval protector by placing it under the baby’s clothes and around his or her body, like a belt, to protect the belly button from constant friction and exposure.  This can help reduce the chances of infection or irritation.  It is said that it can even help give your baby the “perfect innie” belly button.  Then, what I think serves as the best purpose, the Belly Binder can also help relieve an infant’s colic or soothe a fussy baby.  By placing it snuggly over the baby’s clothes, the warmth and slight pressure on the belly can help to alleviate gas or colic. Some babies may cry or be fussy simply because they want to be held and cuddled more than other babies. The Belly Binder can help with this too as the warmth and snug fit can be calming and serve the same purpose as the “burrito wrap” that some babies seem to take comfort in.

I have been known to recommend gripe water for gassy or colicky babies, but now that I know about JuJu Band I’ve been sharing it with my clients and other expectant mothers. There has been a lot of positive feedback. I recently gifted one to a friend and she just had her baby. I’m looking forward to hearing how well it works for her too.

For more info visit the JuJu Band Website and follow them on FacebookTwitter and YouTube.

Healthy Habits During Pregnancy

I would like to thank Katie Moore for the following guest article. I always enjoy meeting people with similar experiences and lifestyles. The following article is insightful and contains information for anyone looking to lead a more natural and healthy lifestyle. Thanks Katie!

LemonLime

My Journey to Eat Naturally During Pregnancy Gave Me Many Benefits

When I found out I was pregnant, I realized I really needed to make a bigger effort to change the way I ate.  Like many busy women, I often grabbed prepackaged snack crackers and bottles of soda while I was on the go driving back and forth from one errand to another.  Becoming pregnant changed all of that, and I began to take stock of just how unhealthily I was eating.  I had meant for quite some time to make more of an effort to eat healthier foods, but I put it off until it never happened.

With the realization that I was responsible for another person’s health and well being, I became committed to learn how to incorporate more nutritious foods into my weekly diet.  It was not nearly as difficult as I thought it would be; and I ended up feeling significantly better, in spite of moderate pregnancy discomforts and bouts of morning sickness.

Eating Organic

I started taking more notice of the organic foods at my local supermarket.  While I knew they were much more nutritious and they lacked toxic chemicals, I was also slightly surprised to see how costly they were compared to non-organic foods.  By cutting out prepackaged snack foods and carbonated beverages from my shopping list, I was able to save money that could be put towards organic foods.  I also purchased wholesome nuts and Greek yogurts to provide me with adequate amounts of protein without adding on unnecessary calories.  Using coupons helped to cut costs as well, and I also kept an eye out for sales on organic foods and natural ingredients at my local stores.

Ditch the Microwave! Add variety!

Changing the way I cooked foods also made a difference in how well I was eating.  Before getting pregnant, I used to microwave a lot of foods because I was always on the go.  I also cooked a lot of pasta, because those were easy and time-convenient dishes to prepare.  Just boiling pasta and throwing on some store-bought sauce seemed like a good idea in the past for a simple meal.  However, once I started replacing those heavy meals with salads topped with fresh-chopped vegetables and nuts, I almost instantly started feeling significantly better.

Because it can get easy to grow bored with eating salads every day, I started experimenting by looking up recipes for variations on the traditional salad.  I enjoyed experimenting with Greek salads, garden salads topped with boiled eggs and cheese, and a variety of salads topped with fruit.  In the past, I never would have considered adding fruit to my salad, but this actually turned out to be amazing!  I was able to enjoy a sweet and savory meal at the same time by adding raspberries, cracked black pepper, red onions and sliced oranges to my salads.  For a dressing, I used semi-sweet vinaigrette, which brought the entire meal together with a delicious twist!

One huge benefit I discovered from switching to organic foods and wholesome meals from the heavier style of eating I had been accustomed was I felt fuller for a much longer amount of time.  In the past, after eating a large bowl of pasta or a similar type of meal, I was hungry about an hour later.  When I started eating meals loaded with fruits and vegetables, I felt full for several hours.  For snacks, I carried around a bag of grapes and munched on those to tide me over.  I also purchased clementines and almonds and carried those with me when I knew I would have a busy day.

I was completely looking forward to having my baby, and the energy I gained from eating natural foods really helped to provide me stamina to work on the nursery room when I got off work in the evenings.  My life was as busy as ever and yet I had never felt better!  I slowly began trying to learn about having a natural pregnancy and what all that would entail.  When I talked to my doctor about it, she explained that each person views natural pregnancy and lifestyles differently.  She discussed some options with me and made some very helpful suggestions on how I could incorporate a more natural way of living into my lifestyle.  My doctor was so great and informed me about everything pregnancy related- from pregnancy symptoms to delivery to the benefits of cord blood banking!

I started walking three to four times a week to strengthen my body and prepare it for labor and delivery.  My doctor told me that getting solid amounts of exercise would be really helpful in reducing the amount of pain medication I may need when delivery time came.  I highly recommend you speak to your own doctor about how to find great ways to begin living naturally during your pregnancy.  I know you will not be disappointed; and if you are like me, you may turn it into a complete lifestyle!

An Announcement and Everything Wellness

I had a rough week. Hurricane Sandy was no joke and my heart goes out to all those in New York, Jersey and surrounding areas who lost so much. I, fortunately, only lost my electricity. If the temperatures hadn’t dipped and my daughter hadn’t had a cold, it would not have been such a stressful 4 days.  Many are still without power or homes. I pray some sort of normalcy is restored for everyone soon.

I have some news I wanted to share with you earlier in the week. First of all, I have been considering closing up shop here at The Little Green Playpen Blog.  While I love to share products, snacks and restaurants that I feel are safe and healthy for the entire family, I’ve been given a great opportunity to write for a very resourceful and powerful organization and website. While I plan to juggle both for the remainder of the year, I think it would be in my best interest to be fully committed to the latter beginning in 2013.  So, yes, my other news is that I am now a writer for The Wellness Site. I will be sharing my expertise and dedication of everything wellness through my studies and work as a Birth and Postpartum Doula, and as a mother. I will specifically be covering topics related to pregnancy, delivery, infants, toddlers, motherhood and family. I am very excited to begin this new path. I have written my first article which was published last week on the definition and benefits of a Doula.  I hope you will join me over at The Wellness Site as it is a great resource for anything and everything wellness.  You can find the Wellness Team on Facebook and Twitter too.

Thank you for your support!

Happy March…it’s National Nutrition Month!

The perfect time to start my new blog! I actually started my first one back in April of last year with WordPress, but after only a few entries I was swept away on a long Summer Vacation. Come Fall, I was offered a temporary teaching job in California, in my hometown, and soon all free time went out the door! Those 4-5 months were a renewal for me….a re-awakening. I have started 2012 more clear-headed and determined than ever. The future looks bright. So let’s hope it’s not all supposed to end on Dec. 21, 2012!

I now begin this new blog with a clean slate and renewed sense of dedication and motivation. This first post is actually a test run. After major issues with my previous website provider (whose name I shall not mention out of manners)  my new website is up and running. It’s still under construction and revision but please, if you have a moment, check it out! I welcome all feedback. It will give you a better understanding of what The Little Green Playpen is all about. Thank you in advance! thelittlegreenplaypen

Just one tiny issue…my new website provider offers Blog services, as well. I think it would be great to utilize both platforms, but I’m still trying to find a way to link the two…if there is a way. If anyone is familiar with that type of thing, I would appreciate some insight.

Thanks…and Happy National Nutrition Month!
