Helping the Victims of “Sandy”

The holidays are in full swing…but to me, I think to many of us, it’s actually been a very sad time of year. I think the most difficult part has been the frustration at not being able to help as much as I wish I could. My heart and prayers go out to all of the families that are affected by the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut. I’ve kept fairly quiet about the incident as it has caused me a lot of anger and the media only fuels that anger. I want to move that energy into a more positive direction. The heroic stories that have come out have helped inspire that. Yesterday, we honored a moment of silence. I also posted a Green Ribbon on The Little Green Playpen Facebook page in support and memory of the victims and their families. I made my first donation to The Sandy Hook School Support Fund. It still does not feel like enough, but I will continue to do what I can. A few months ago, another tragedy rocked our world. Hurricane Sandy caused a mass of devastation on the East Coast.  While it’s difficult to be angry at a natural disaster, the thought of what so many lost and what so many are still suffering is difficult to digest. We cannot forget that during this holiday season many people are still without homes.  Presents and dinner parties will be last on their list of priorities as they continue to try and rebuild.

HHR-memeAs a WAHM, both of these recent incidents have really hit home. That’s why when I learned that the Touchstone Crystal Division of Swarovski launched a Holiday Hurricane Rebound campaign to support its mompreneurs, I had to help.More than 250 of the independent entrepreneurs who work with the brand as a means of income to support their families have been devastated by Hurricane Sandy. These women are unable to make money during the holiday season because they have lost basic necessities of life–ranging from power and heat to even losing their homes. In order to make it possible for these women to continue to earn income during the holiday season, Touchstone Crystal has launched the campaign to assist these women. Those willing to help will be partnered with a specific Touchstone Crystal small business owner on the East Coast whose circumstances have been effected by the storm to the point at which her ability to earn income is seriously challenged. Participants will be able to connect with a Touchstone Crystal entrepreneur directly, via internet or telephone, and help by setting up and hosting an online jewelry sales party. This an easy way for us women to join together and support each other during these difficult times. This is a great way to give back during the Holiday Seasons.

“We are incredibly proud of the work these women do. Overwhelmingly, this is a business in which women support women, and have always done so,” said Liz DiPaolo, Managing Director Touchstone Crystal, a division of Swarovski. “We are initiating a program that connects women across the country to the Touchstone Crystal independent entrepreneurs whose businesses have been truly devastated, so that they can continue to earn income for themselves and their families during this trying time.”

I’ve made it my silly little goal to stop by and follow/ say “hey” to every mom on our bloggy mom hop this month. Thank you for being such a wonderful resource and positive voice in this strange sea of holiday rush and unexpected hurt and confusion. It’s so sweet to be on this journey with you.

If you’re up for a bit of a ride I’d love, love, love for you to join me at Local Sugar Hawaii where we’re riding the wave of life together, one adventure at a time. And this weekend we’re ringing in the new year together at An Aloha Affair. You can link up all of your creative work and share it with other sweet souls looking to make meaningful connections. Stop by anytime, you’re always welcome.

Happy New Years to You and Yours.

  3. i love that you’ve encouraged readers to help others. Sometimes when we’re removed from crisis, it’s so easy to view it as a different world.
